We’ve noticed two issues that prompted our policy proposal.
The first in the tendency of entrepreneurial students and start-up founders to leave the area where they were most recently educated. This is particularly the case for Champaign-Urbana and the nearby University of Illinois. More information about this issue can be found here. The second is that current visa policies work against immigrants who want to start their own companies. There are no entrepreneurial visas available in the United States, and the available visas do not encourage startups. The University of Illinois has a high population of international students, and a change in policies regarding entrepreneurial immigrants could directly help the local community.
